Hidden Gems in Shrewsbury!

With the cold weather, it’s hard to get out of the house and find something to do, especially with antsy children in-tow. Museums are always a fun, cheap (and warm) idea. Here are some museums offering classes and activities to keep you occupied during these long winter months.

1. February Vacation Classes at the Worcester Art Museum

The museum offers classes all week for children ages 3-17. There are history and arts and crafts classes. Most of the history classes encourage children to explore the world and think about where they would like to travel. Some include: Intergalactic Archaeology, Treasures along the Nile, and Art across America. Some art classes include Patterns in Pottery and Watercolor for Travelers. Lunch is included daily with the class.  Classes range from $20-$80. http://www.worcesterart.org/Education/vacation-week/

2. Knights! Exhibit at The Worcester Art Mueseum

Who doesn’t want a knight in shining armor? This will be a long-term exhibit and most of the armor will be brought from the Higgins Armory Museum. Different styles of armor from renaissance Europe and the Knights of the Round Table to Japanese warrior armor will be shown. http://www.worcesterart.org/Exhibitions/knights/

3. General Artemas Ward Museum

This museum is a must-see because of the history, and of course the location, right here in Shrewsbury. Built in the early 1700’s, it was one of the first houses built in this area of Massachusetts. General Artemas Ward was a prominent member of society in Shrewsbury in the 18th century. During the American Revolution, he was appointed to Commander in Chief of the Massachusetts forces. He served in the senate and as a judge in the following years. The house has remained in the Ward family since, and was donated to Harvard University in 1925. During the winter, you have to make an appointment to visit. It’s free admission.http://www.wardhouse.harvard.edu/
